| Patients
who exhibit osteoarthritis in one compartment may not need
a total knee replacement to relieve pain and restore function
to the knee. The alternative treatment is a unicondylar implant,
which is much smaller than a total knee replacement and leaves the
healthy tissue intact. There is less blood loss, a lower morbidity
rate and a shorter recovery time. The entire surgery is performed
through a very small incision. This leaves the rest of the knee,
including the ligaments intact. Patients are generally able to go
home from the hospital the following day. Most patients are walking
without an assistive device in two to three weeks.
